Hello and Welcome,
After months of inactivity we are finally gonna do something with
our
site. I mean there is so much going on and more often than not we
are in the middle of it with our cameras.
Bike Culture is alive and well in Melbourne, so much so that there
isn’t
always time to fit it all in. Here's a small sample of whats been
happening this last few weeks....The Celluloid Cycles film festival
featuring short films and feature films all dedicated to bikes. 4
Nights
of bicycle entertainment and suprises lovingly cobbled together by
Tim Sheedy.
The Thursday night before Easter the Melbourne and Districts Messenger
Association (M.D.M.A.)held and Alley Cat race followed by a B.B.Q
with "Messenger skills events" on the Saturday. By all reports
a riotous time was had by all.
Last Saturday the 22nd April at 4.pm down by the Yarra Trails in Ivanhoe a CYCLOCROSS style series kicked off with over 10 riders
competing...some even on 'Cross bikes. This series will be on going
and is open to all comers 26" or 700c, geared or S-SPEED.
Just be prepared to run and jump. Delux Bicycles are hosting
it.
Full Gas promotions Thursday night crits are still going strong and
if you are serious about your racing/riding and want a hard hit-out
then
under the Wesgate bridge is where you should be.
Last month Melbourne was taken over by the COMMONWEALTH Games and
the
best thing for me was that half the city was closed to traffic....there
were bikes everywhere. Talk about reclaim the streets!
Back in February the 1st CASTLEMAINE MTB Festival was pushing screaming
into the world. More of a singlespeed festival than a MTB festival,
particularly memorable for introducing 16" Kids bike street crits
onto
the scene.
COGS Bicycle Café up in MT Evelyn picked up the Baton at its
opening party and held a 16" speedway event. In between
brewing standout coffees and baking excellent muffins Damian
throws together some sweet custom s/speed bikes. All whilst
providing mechanical support for riders on the
Warburton Rail trail.
And it's not just the organised events that are leading the charge...look around the streets. Single-speeds abound , Fixed wheels
are flourishing and commuting is going crazy.
We truly live in a bicycle paradise.
Keep an eye out for Issue 4 of ONEMag in which we will attempt to reflect
all of the above in our tiny, glossy A6 pages. It is due out in a month or two and can be found in various bike shops or just e-mail
me
and I will sort you out.
Cheers,
Dave @ ONEMag
